TRIP REPORT: Cathay Pacific BKK – HKG from the upper deck of the 747!

With our recent visit to Bangkok we had the opportunity to fly Business Class on Cathay Pacific to LAX.

Growing up in LA, I remember the Cathay Pacific commercial campaign, “There’s a new world arriving on Cathay.”  Do you remember the 80’s commercial with the catchy jingle?

Cathay Pacific Airways flight  754
Wednesday, 30 March 2016
Departure: 12:50
Arrival: 14:22
Flight Time: 2+27
Aircraft: 747-400
Seats: 88A and 88K

After spending a few days in Phuket, Thailand with great friends and an amazing house rental from Air BNB, it was time to leave (insert sad face here).

For our departure we were able to book two seats on Cathay Pacific, business class from BKK – HKG – LAX.  In this review, we will take a look at our first segment, BKK – HKG.

As we were booking our outbound flights, we noticed something odd, a seat map for a 747?!  Cathay Pacific has just a few passenger 747’s left in operation, in fact checking Flight Radar24 we count 3 left currently flying.   We quickly called to see if we could do a flight change to the 747.  After 30 minutes on hold, we got good news, we had scored seats 88A & 88K!

According to an email from Cathay Pacific and this post on Reddit, the last 747-400 flight is as follows:

Date: 30 September 2016

  • Flight: CX542
  • Departure: Hong Kong (HKG) – 16:25
  • Arrival: Tokyo, Haneda (HND) – 21:35

Date: 1 October 2016

  • Flight: CX543
  • Departure: Tokyo, Haneda (HND) – 10:35
  • Arrival: Hong Kong (HKG) – 14:10

How was our flight experience? Let’s take a look.  Check-in at BKK was smooth and easy with a fast pass through security to the Cathay Pacific lounge!

Now, let’s talk about the Cathay Pacific lounge at BKK, it’s AMAZING!  We could do an entire post just on the lounge!  Here’s why, they have a fresh to order hot food bar, dim sum and a salad bar.  Plus comfortable lounge chairs over looking the BKK runway!

Here is the hot food bar:

Dim Sum:

Hanging out in a lounge chair:

We left the lounge about 60 minutes prior to departure.  As with all things in Asia airports, you grab a handy luggage cart, toss your bag in and walk to the gate.

Boarding was quick after the hour delay.  I have to say, it never gets old boarding a 747 and then climbing to the top via the center staircase!

Once on board we quickly settle into the old style (as the lead FA was quick to point out) business class seat on Cathay.

Once settled in we are welcomed aboard with pre-departure drinks and then we pushed back pretty quick on our way to HKG:

After take off the crew was quick on their feet to offer nuts and drinks!  Ahhh, how I so enjoyed their Oriental Breeze.

We were then offered menus:

We didn’t get time to enjoy the IFE system as it was a pretty short flight.  However the cabin crew did ask us to fill out a survey, (nice touch asking for feedback in person).  We gave them high marks!

We are SAD to see the Cathay Pacific 747 go…

Our final grades of a Cathay Pacific regional flight

Business International Lounge BKK: A+

Comfort of the Seat: B+

Cabin Space Seat Layout: B

Food: A-

Amenity kit: None Provided

Storage space: B

Inflight cabin crew service: A+

Ground customer service: A+

Price: A+

Our final verdict for a regional flight on Cathay Pacific is excellent! This flight would far excel any U.S. domestic flight. The crew was EXTREMELY kind and friendly, the food was great (considering the catering kitchen was in BKK) and we got to ride on one of the last 747s!

“There’s a new world arriving on Cathay.”

Thanks so much to Cathay Pacific for a wonderful flight! Have you flown on Cathay?  What did you think?  Leave us a comment!
